Virtual Reality is here and big name companies will release their AAA titles soon.

However, many of these titles continue the paradigms of traditional flat-screen gaming and make people sick. This terrible stigma of inducing motion sickness has and will damage VR and especially independent developers.

In over 5 years of VR development, I have learned and unlearned many important VR best-practices and have made sure that every single one of my player did not feel sick when trying my games. Native VR integration has made VR development much easier, but it doesn’t teach developers about basic VR design principles and why they are necessary.

This session provides guidelines and best practices to prevent motion sickness in players and explains how to spot bad VR games and VR demo setups. It highlights the importance of thoughtful VR game design to make best use of the platform. VR is a great medium and it deserves developers that treat it as integral part of their game, not a quick add-on.
